The Theatrical Impact on the LGBTQ+ Movement

June has long been celebrated as Pride Month, but with the current state of the country, many of the local pride celebrations have either been canceled or postponed until a later date. MTC will do its best to fill this void with an inspiring, empowering, and educational, musical event.

ABOUT THIS EVENT
PRIDE IN THE THEATRE will be comprised of three chronological segments centered around major events in LGBTQ+ history. These include Stonewall through the 1980s, the AIDS crisis of the 80s and 90s, and civil rights and marriage equality in the 2000s to present day. Songs, scenes, and monologues will paint the picture for how theatre reflected the social climate of the time, followed by interviews with LGBTQ+ activists and/or significant contributors to the movement on the local or national scene. Songs, scenes, and monologues featured range from a variety of shows including Falsettos, La Cage aux Folles, Fun Home, A Chorus Line, A Letter to Harvey Milk, The Prom, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Boys in the Band, Mothers and Sons, The Normal Heart, The Inheritance, and Torch Song Trilogy.

Dr. Gary Blick
Dr. Gary Blick is an internationally renowned HIV/AIDS clinician, clinical researcher, lecturer and humanitarian. His career in healthcare spans the length of more than 30 years, beginning at the University of Miami Medical School. He is the Chief Medical Officer of Health Care Advocates International™, Co-Founder of HIV Advocates and Founder of ZAP (Zimbabwe AIDS Project) where he built a state-of- the-art HIV and general medical clinic servicing over 8600 people in Zimbabwe. As a Key Opinion Leader (KOL) in HIV and with his knowledge and interest in HIV, he was recently appointed to be the Chief Medical Officer of Just Thrive Probiotics.
Dr. Blick remains on the cutting edge of HIV/AIDS care, having provided medical treatment to over 3,500 individuals living with HIV/AIDS and to members of the LGBTQ community in CT and the New England and Tri-State areas. He has been the Principal Investigator in more than 120 clinical research trials, and has authored or co-authored more than 190 medical manuscripts and scientific presentations/abstracts regarding therapies and treatments for those with HIV/AIDS.
Most recently, Dr. Blick united the lower Fairfield County, Connecticut HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ communities by bringing Mid-Fairfield AIDS Project and Triangle Community Center under the same roof as the last non-profit he founded, World Health Clinicians. He was integral in winning the Connecticut approval of Medical Marijuana, has been fighting for Aid In Dying for the terminally ill since 2010, and is fighting to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV and HIV testing, previously with the social media campaign he founded in 2013, HIV Equal, and now as Co-Founder of the international HIVAdvocates.com.
Dr. Blick is one of the founding members of the American Academy of HIV Medicine (AAHIVM) and is certified as an HIV specialist (AAHIVS). He is also a member of the American Medical Association, International AIDS Society, HIV Medical Association, International Association of Physicians for AIDS Care, New England Gay/Bi-sexual Men’s Health Alliance, Connecticut State Medical Society, and the Fairfield County Medical Association.

Joanna Gleason
Joanna Gleason is a Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Theatre World Award winner. She studied at UCLA, then Occidental College, from which she graduated. Joanna has been a teacher herself, holding classes and workshops all over the country. She has also crafted new theatrical works and in early 2002 she directed her first New York play.
Joanna was in the TV Shows "Hello, Larry", "Bette" with Bette Midler and Lindsay Lohan, and "Love and War" where she directed as well. Her directing talents were also used on Lifetime's "Oh, Baby" series.
In 1988 Joanna won the Tony as Best Actress for her role as the Baker’s Wife in Sondheim’s "Into the Woods." She also won a Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for the same performance. She recieved another Tony nomination and a Drama Desk nomination for her work in "Joe Egg." Joanna won a Theater World Award for "The Real Thing," and another Drama Desk award for "Social Security."
Most recently you may have seen her starring in the Broadway smash Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and she has a few Hollywood movies due in the coming months - stay tuned!
Jonathan Lovitz
Jonathan D. Lovitz is a national recognized LGBT business and public policy advocate, currently serving as the Senior Vice President of the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) and as the previous Director of NGLCC New York. At the NGLCC he serves as both national press secretary and head of advocacy and political work, where he has been responsible for establishing the more than a dozen county, city, and state laws passed over the last four years opening up contracting and economic opportunity to the LGBT Business community.
Lovitz is a regular commentator on MSNBC, CNBC, NPR, The Advocate, and Bloomberg, among others, and has served as a keynote speaker for the US Dept. of Defense, Us. Dept. of Treasury, the United Nations, The Trevor Project, Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS, the Democratic Party and more.
The Advocate Magazine named Lovitz a "2019 Queer Icon" alongside some of the year's top activists, artists, and political figures. In 2018 Lovitz was recognized by Business Equality Magazine as one of its "40 LGBTQ Leaders Under 40.” Lovitz graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Florida, where he was named "Outstanding Young Alumni" in April 2018. @JDLovitz
