STRAVINSKY

A SOLDIER’S TALE

Stravinsky’s Soldier’s Tale is one of the most important and exhilarating musical works of the twentieth century. Written as a response to World War I, it is a dark fable about a deserting soldier who trades his fiddle for riches, but ultimately loses his soul.  Scored for seven instruments, actor and dancer, Stravinsky elicits a remarkably wide range of colors from his small ensemble in this spiky but ultimately deeply affecting masterpiece.

RICKY IAN GORDON

ORPHEUS AND EURIDICE

Ricky Ian Gordon updates the classic love story of Orpheus and Euridice for the modern era. His beautifully lyrical music embodies both the best of musical theater and classical art song, and his novel and thrilling approach to this tale has the clarinetist perform the role of Orpheus in staged interactions with the soprano, who plays Euridice—all over a lush accompaniment of strings and piano.

SPANISH SIZZLE

The vibrant colors of Spain come to life in this program of song and drama from the Iberian peninsula. After a variety of art songs spanning three centuries, the ensemble will perform the centerpiece of the program: Manuel De Falla’s Amor Brujo (Love, The Magician). This chamber ballet tells the story of a young woman haunted by the ghost of her dead husband. Performed by a diverse group of 11 musicians, vocal soloist and flamenco dancer, this evocative and rich work is a feast for the senses.
